Emirates

We flew Emirates out of Houston. It's a very nice airline, but anytime you are on a flight for 14+ hours, it gets really old...really. The one thing we didn't realize before we flew was that there is a weight limit on the carryons. We were WAY over and the Houston Emirates staff is very serious about it. So after much repacking, we made it. We had 8 checked bags and 5 carryons. We made sure to pack everything randomly so if any bags were lost, we would all still have clothes. We didn't lose one bag...pretty lucky!!

The Houston to Dubai flight was overnight. We all managed to get some sleep, and the TVs in each seat were a great distraction. The food was okay, but I made sure to order kid's meals for my boys for the trip home.

In Dubai, we had the hotel layover. Such a great deal...a quick nap, meal and shower. FYI, your luggage stays at the airport, so pack toiletries and a change of clothes in your carryon!! The next day, it was a short 4 hour flight into Addis Ababa.

On the way back, the Addis to Dubai flight was at night. Then we got the hotel room again and left for Houston the next morning. Flying 16 hours during the day was really rough. Ru thought it was nighttime and pretty much slept the whole flight. Our 4 yo Biscuit was sick, Sick, SICK!!! I'm talking out both ends, uncontrollably, leaving the plane in undies and a tshirt only. It was pure misery for him, Shaun, and me. It will be awhile before I want to fly anywhere...a LONG while...

Once we got to Houston, I stayed behind with Ru in immigration for an hour...ugh...while Shaun and the boys got the bags (and changed Bisc). Then we drove back to San Antonio and finally we were H-O-M-E!!!!!!!

I really would recommend Emirates. The seats seemed larger with more leg room, and the bassinets were great. We didn't get one on the long flight home, but they blocked a seat Ru, so we had plenty of room. Overall, a good experience.

Ru Has Arrived!

We are home safe and sound! The trip was wonderful....absolutely perfect. I am SO glad we took our boys and stayed so long. We fell in love with our baby girl, her country, and her culture. My boys kept saying they would love to stay longer!! It was amazing!

I plan on posting several times about different topics to give advice to future travelers. There was so much I wish I had known before we went...so hopefully, it will help someone. I have tons of CHI friends who have recently passed court (while we were in Ethiopia, so we knew first!!) and friends who have court dates coming up NEXT week!! Such great news all around!!

Here are some pics until I can get my posts written and put together a montage....I'm kinda busy staring at and kissing and cuddling and loving on my DAUGHTER!!!!

Another Phone Call

I spoke with Missy for a few minutes today. I have to say that it was the most peaceful I have heard her sound in a very, very long time. They are exactly where they should be with exactly who they should be with.

She promises to have tons of tips and advice for those traveling in the future. They were pretty much left on their own since they got there. Today they were starting the shopping, lion zoo, coffee ceremony, etc. They found a great pizza place to eat at. Food has not been a problem.

Ru is very attached to Missy and Shaun already and is not crazy about strangers at all. Missy says she is tiny with cute little newborn-like toes!!!

Sixty Seconds

This is Laura again!

I just spoke with Missy for about 60 seconds before her phone cut out.

Ru is wonderful!!! She was a little nervous meeting her family at first but today a maid walked into their room and Ru cried and reached straight for her mama!!!! So beautiful!

When I hear more, I'll share more.

Ru has met her Mama, her Daddy, and her Big Brothers

I have hi-jacked Missy's blog (I only feel safe using the term 'hi-jacked' since they have already landed)

For all you Facebook followers, this is old news and all I have so far. As of about noon on Wednesday, the Salyers Five is a complete Six!!! They finally have Little Miss Ru in their arms. I have not received any phone calls or emails yet--I am sure Missy will have a very good excuse for the lack of communication. LOL

I will keep ya'll posted....

Former Blog Stalker and Current Blog Hi-jacker,
